Overlooked Free Resources For Your Business At Your Public Library

As information distributors, libraries subscribe to online services freely available to the public. Most in New Jersey have access to a variety of databases through JerseyClicks (jerseyclicks.org). This portal enables business owners to get reliable information faster than scouring the internet, and it’s free. All you need is a library card.

One of the best databases accessible through JerseyClicks is ReferenceUSA, which can help users create marketing plans, conduct competitive analysis, raise funds and locate potential customers. It has information pulled from thousands of public sources on more than 24 Million Businesses and 262 Million Consumers.

After logging into ReferenceUSA, basic searches can be accomplished by clicking on a category and entering a name, location or phone. The “Advanced Search” function, however, is where the true value lies. You can easily pinpoint the exact listings you want and omit those you don’t. Check out a couple of these categories below.

U.S. Businesses Search or U.S. New Businesses Search

Businesses can be found by searching specific SIC Codes, employee size, sales volume, business expenditures and more. In addition to basic company information, ReferenceUSA adds valuable details including websites, franchise and brand information, email addresses, and business credit rating scores (where available). For new business searches, you can also choose to view results that were added within a set time frame (last week, last month, et al.).

U.S. Consumers & Lifestyles

When building a marketing plan, do you want to waste effort reaching out to those not in your target demographic? Of course not. Search data can include area code and geographic location, but more importantly home value, income, lifestyle interests, occupation and more.

Check with the library where you live or work to find out more about getting a library card and to discover valuable business resources at your disposal. Live or work in Montclair? Learn more through our Book a Librarian program by visiting montclairlibrary.org/bookalibrarian.
