March is National Nutrition Month and annual nutrition education campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics. During this month the academy hopes to put emphasis on making informed food choices and developing healthy behaviors related to physical activity. During this month, while you are on the go, it is important to make nutrition decisions. Incorporating smaller meals or snacks between your daily activities can have a positive impact on your health and wellbeing.

Snaking can be helpful energy boost between meals throughout the day and contribute to caloric intake needs. However, when snacking, it is important to choose nutrient-dense options that account for 200-300 calories for your daily intake, depending on your activity level.

It is important to only snack when you are truly hungry. A lot of people develop the habit of eating because they have access to food or eating out of boredom or for emotional reasons. Another reason for excessive snacking is dehydration. Make sure to stay hydrated throughout the day and only snack when completely necessary.

Pre-planning snacks and portioning. Meal prepping is a cost-friendly way to make smarter food decision. This can help control the number of calories consumed and ingredients added to food.

Cut down on added sugars. Food items that contain added sugars, typically contain an excessive number of calories as well. These foods are said to contain "empty calories" which are calories that do not contribute to energy or nutrient intake.

Following these few steps can help you control your diet and make informed food choices during this month of nutrition promotion.
