John Fretz, Partner at eMDTec shares that eMDTec initially started as a medical software and billing company before shifting its focus to providing security-focused technology solutions to the healthcare sector. “This pivot allowed eMDTec to grow rapidly and expand into several other industries, including financial advisory, accounting, and benefits administration firms. We also employ multiple local firefighters!”

John shared, “It’s fulfilling to know we’re making a difference by giving people confidence and peace of mind in their digital environments.”

Several breaches have occurred in recent times that impacted many individuals and entities. Situations like this can be easily avoided with the right employee training. John went on, “I learned more about the importance of cybersecurity awareness training, not just for large corporations but for smaller businesses and nonprofits as well. Many smaller organizations assume they’re less likely to be targeted by cyber threats, but they actually face significant risks due to limited resources for dedicated security.”

For anyone starting out in the IT or cybersecurity business, John suggests focusing on building trust and staying adaptable. “This industry changes quickly, so stay curious and committed to continuous learning, whether through certifications, industry events, or self-study. Building trust with clients is equally crucial—prioritize open communication, be transparent about both your services and any limitations, and always put your clients' best interests first. Finally, don't underestimate the value of proactive support. Preventing issues is as valuable, if not more so, than fixing them, and clients will appreciate knowing you’re helping them stay ahead of potential problems.”
