Thirty-two years ago, Steve Hockstein launched his business Harvard Studio Photography LLC in the basement of his home on Harvard Street. Hence the name. His current location is at 7 Oak Place in Montclair.
Harvard Studio Photography got started on a cold winter’s day when Steve decided to leave his job as a newspaper photographer to explore other opportunities and creative avenues. Steve has always had a passion for creating images and has had a passion for photography since high school. Besides, he never wanted to take over the family hardware store business.
“What I love most is working with people and capturing images of them that they love,” shared Steve.

Harvard Studio Photography specializes in commercial and editorial photography, studio and on-location portraiture, and headshots. Steve’s work has been published around the world. He is proud to own a successful business for over 30 years.
“What sets Harvard Studio Photography apart from others is the knowledge, experience, technique, and willingness to collaborate with others,” explained Steve.
Steve is inspired by his wife, Karen. “She always has a positive outlook, and manages to work out on a daily basis, without fail.”
Steve joined the North Essex Chamber of Commerce over 20 years ago to meet and share ideas with like-minded entrepreneurs, with the hope of building his new business. His advice to someone starting out in business is to stay apprised of changes in technology. “Your future depends on your willingness to stay up to date.”
Steve and Harvard Studio Photography regularly give back to local causes as well as mentor up-and-coming visual artists.
If his business had a theme song, it would be “Freeze Frame” by J. Geils Band. Steve describes himself as an audiophile. His living room has been consumed by music. If he could choose a mentor, it would be John Lennon and Paul McCartney.
When he’s not working, Steve loves to be outdoors biking or playing tennis.
Something he learned recently is that you can make a tasty mac and cheese meal using Campbell’s cheddar cheese soup!
Steve shared a fun fact that not many people know. “We have a five-and-a-half-pound dog who thinks she can control our thoughts. She’s not wrong…”
