Do You Remember Why You Started?

Remember-Why-You-Started

Maybe it’s been decades, years, or months since you decided to undertake the journey of entrepreneurship. And since then, you’ve poured yourself into this business, striving to reach your success milestones along the way.

But let’s pause for a moment. Try to remember…how long has it been since you’ve felt that spark of excitement when you first knew it was time to branch out on your own?

Fleeting as emotions are, we all know it’s not possible for such intense inspiration like that to linger. But no matter how far you’ve come, you can’t let that feeling be forgotten. It’s why you’re here. It’s why you started.

If it’s been too long and you’ve lost focus on why you started your business in the first place, let’s try to help you remember…

Go Back to the Beginning

When’s the last time you looked at your business plan? Or, perhaps, did you not even write one? This vitally important step is often overlooked. However, it should be viewed as the blueprint for your business. Take some time to review what you had written. And if there is no document, think about writing one, even if it’s been years since you started.

Don’t Mistake Hyperactivity for Productivity

Yes, it’s a given: if you run your own business, you’re going to be busy. But there are variations on the word “busy” that draw very different definitions. Take a look at your daily tasks, are they actually helping you to achieve a goal, or are they treadmill tasks? Business owners very often get lost in the day to day tasks and lose sight of the next milestone they’d like to hit. When you first started, you were driven and focused. If the administrivia got you lost in the weeds, think about shifting those tasks elsewhere and re-focusing on your strengths.

Balance Passion with Wisdom

Regardless of how long it’s been since you began your entrepreneurial journey, you should still retain the passion you once had. As an entrepreneur, that is one of the most important aspects of your job. Passion, however, does not function well when not balanced by wisdom. There are many aspects of running a business that you don’t realize you’ll need to know. This is why it is so important to remain a student, no matter how long you’ve been in business. There is always something new to learn and always some hidden aspect of yourself to uncover.

As a company that’s helped well over 2,000 companies start and grow, we’ve met entrepreneurs at every step of the journey and at every level of experience. And no matter who they are or what they do, sometimes you need to go back to go forward.
